The United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines (UNYAP) is inviting you and your university to participate in this year’s Stand Up, Take Action campaign of United Nations to help achieve the eight (8) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were agreed upon – and committed – by world leaders in the Millennium Declaration of 2000. These eight goals are anchored on eradicating extreme poverty by 2015.
With the theme “Stand United, Fight Poverty”, the global campaign will run from 16 to 18 October 2009 and coincide with the annual observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and the Philippines’ National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 717-2004.
As we are nearing the final stretch to the 2015 deadline, all efforts are geared towards increasing the clamor for policy and programmes change and ensuring that more Filipinos become aware of the significance of these Goals in their everyday lives.
Last year, through the help of various organizations and schools, the campaign successfully mobilized 35.2 million Filipinos through various events and activities – the largest number ever recorded by a country worldwide. Incidentally, the global mobilization also aims to set a new Guinness World Record for having the largest number of participants in a single event. The more Filipinos that participate in anti-poverty events, the louder our message will be, and the more government leaders will listen to our voices.
This year, we are inviting you to join this global effort by participating in the “I Vote for MDG” survey. The survey is intended to get peoples’ pulse and thoughts on the issues that should be given priority by the the next set of national government officials. The survey results will be presented to 2010 presidential candidates in an MDG Presidential Forum on Oct. 20. Policy papers will be developed based on results of the survey.
By taking part in the survey, you and your campus will be taking the first step to ensuring that policies addressing the core needs and issues closest to the peoples’ hearts are developed and addressed by our new set of government leaders.
Attached please find the “I Vote for MDG” survey form. You may have the form photocopied, or we can provide you with more copies (Please let us know how many copies you need) for distribution to your students, faculty and non-teaching personnel. For this action to be counted as a Stand Up action, the school-wide filling up of forms should be done within Oct. 16 and 17, 2009 only. After the collective action, we request your office to collect and tally the results. On Oct. 18, kindly submit to us a letter – on official university letterhead – certifying the number of students, faculty and non-teaching personnel that participated in the “I Vote for MDG” campaign, and identify the highlights of the survey results. You may keep the actual survey forms for future reference (in case Guinness World Records asks for proofs of participation) or you may send the filled-up forms to us.
It is our hope that your university will be a part of this global campaign to end extreme poverty. For more information and for downloadable Stand Up song, “I Vote for MDG” form and videos, you may log on to www.un.org.ph/standup.
You may get in touch with our Stand Up Secretariat at Tel. Nos. 901-04-05/06 or email mr_deansity@yahoo.com and standupphilippines@yahoo.com.
It would be a great privilege to have you join us and the rest of humanity in this global fight against poverty. Join us and be counted!
Yours sincerely,
